Handbook of a Town (2016-2017)
Reggio Emilia is an Italian town with around 170,000 inhabitants and is famous as the birthplace of the national flag, the Italian Tricolour, adopted in 1797. It is also known for its communist past, its preschools and its food. I was born in Reggio Emilia, and so was my father. Reggio Emilia is where I grew up and I still live there, but I’ve always found it hard to regard it as my town. My mother and her family came from Sardinia and also lived and settled in other Italian regions. My strong bonds with them and with the island made me grow up as a sort of stateless person.

After the death of my mother (in September 2014), whose ashes were interred in the town’s cemetery, because, unlike me, she had always felt a citizen of Reggio Emilia, I felt a strong need to get to know my native town better. However, in the absence of a spontaneous bond developed slowly over time, in order to fully understand Reggio Emilia, I had to analyze it scientifically. I studied and wandered around its streets, but, most of all, I sampled, dissected, observed, catalogued and compared, as if I were writing a proper handbook of the town (and of my family).

Reggio Emilia è una città italiana di 170.000 abitanti ed è nota per aver dato i natali, nel 1797, alla bandiera nazionale, il Tricolore. È conosciuta anche per il passato comunista, per gli asili d’infanzia e per il cibo. Sono nata a Reggio Emilia e così mio padre. A Reggio Emilia sono cresciuta e vivo tuttora, ma mi è sempre stato difficile considerarla la mia città. Mia madre e la sua famiglia provenivano dalla Sardegna e vissero e si radicarono anche in altre regioni italiane: il forte legame con queste persone e con l’isola mi ha fatto crescere come un’apolide.

Dopo la morte di mia madre (settembre 2014), le cui ceneri sono state sepolte nel cimitero cittadino, perché lei, al contrario di me, si era sempre sentita reggiana, ho avvertito forte il bisogno di conoscere meglio la mia città natale. Tuttavia, in assenza di un legame spontaneo creatosi lentamente, per capire fino in fondo Reggio Emilia è stato necessario analizzarla in modo scientifico. Ho studiato e sono andata in giro per le strade, ma soprattutto ho campionato, sezionato, osservato, catalogato, confrontato. Come se stessi scrivendo un vero e proprio manuale della città (e della mia famiglia).
